We did A LOT of walking around the town of Melaka, probably close to 10 miles this one day all the way back from the Portuguese Village to Jonker Street.  Lets just say we were being as careful as possible not to fall into these major walking hazards all over the city.  AND, when there is not sidewalk 99% of the time, it's now night time, and you're trying to avoid the on-coming traffic, you come pretty close to those things.
